The Three Cornerstones of Intention

2014-12-13 16.14.18Yesterday I was reminded WHY I chose to move here in the first place.

Okay – I will admit – I have spent the last couple of days feeling really sorry for myself.  I felt groggy from my surgery, the vision in my right eye is non-existent & cloudy and I am feeling like a soggy lump from lack of exercise.

But yesterday I was determined to get out of the house, go for a long walk and get some fresh air – which I did.  I walked for two hours and found my self on West Beach in Port Jefferson.  Ah, yes – that is why I moved here: the sound of the waves, the wind, seeing the buoys marking the channel, the stretch of beach and the broad expanse of sky refreshed my heart, my mind and my body.

My current intentions are to heal, recover fully and to build a new life and home for myself here in Port Jefferson.  I can sit around on my couch all day thinking about these intentions and saying them to my self as positive affirmations – but it will take much more then just having the intention of healing and the intention of building a life here.

I believe there are three cornerstones of Intention – each one necessary in order to manifest change and attract what you desire into your life: Belief, Benefit & Action.

1. BELIEF.  You must believe that what you desire to create is possible.  I believe completely that my eye will heal and that I will experience a full recovery.  Often times belief is not a matter of knowing but one of faith and of trust. Sometimes we are in a place in our lives that feels very dark, we may feel really stuck and change may feel impossible.  Shifting from here can be challenging but step one is to move from limited thinking to a belief in possibility and the faith that you can call in to yourself the life that you desire.

2. BENEFIT. This second cornerstone is so important and often neglected when we are working on setting intentions and creating change in our lives.  Dr. Love, in her  book “Beyond the Secret” writes, “Instead of focusing on the selfishness and greed in human nature that leads us to want, want, want, (let us) see beyond the individual ego and to attract and retain objects and events that will be beneficial to ourselves and to others.” Dr. Love calls on us to use the power of intention to gain insight in to ourselves and to uncover our innate purpose.  I encourage you to ask yourself how your intentions are helping you to learn and grow and move toward your best self. Is what you are desiring to create in your life benefiting you and those around you in a positive, fulfilling way?

3. ACTION.  We can have the best of intentions.  We can make lists of things we want, things we do not want.  We can say our positive affirmations all day long.  But if we are not in action it is all for nothing.  Action is the bedrock of change, it is the tipping point for manifestation, for creating and for attracting what you desire into life. We do not always need to know exactly HOW. We may make mistakes, our action may seem a bit chaotic and less then perfect.  But in taking action and staying consistently IN action – this is the magic to the unfolding of your intention.  There is so much truth to that Nike commercial – JUST DO IT! Do something that is moving you forward!

And so – as I got my body up and into action yesterday I reconnected with my belief that my move to Port Jefferson was for my highest and best. I remembered that the ocean and the water provide my body and mind with healing and solace.  And I was reminded that some days all I need to do is just show up for myself and put one foot in front of the other and walk down the beach.
