smooth-seas-do-not-make-skillful-sailorsThis week in the It Takes A Village Wellness Center & Yoga Studio we are talking about trust and faith. Tough topics during a turbulent time when we are experiencing some rough seas.  There seems to be so much angst, anger, confusion and bashing going on in our political scene and elsewhere.

I was working with a coaching client this morning and she was saying to me how challenged she felt to detach herself from all of it – she was feeling pulled into the negativity and unable to shake it. Our conversation inspired me to share my thoughts with all of you.

The truth of our lives is that there are always challenges, always struggles and often much suffering. And yet we go on with our lives. This is, I believe the way of the world. Continue Reading

Brené Brown writes, “A deep sense of love and belonging is an irreducible need of all people. We are biologically, cognitively, physically, and spiritually wired to love, to be loved, and to belong. When those needs are not met, we don’t function as we were meant to. We break. We fall apart. We numb. We ache. We hurt others. We get sick.”

And yet when we experience challenges or set backs in our lives, when we come to believe that who we are is somehow broken or unacceptable to others, many of us go in to hiding. Addiction, abuse, rape, obesity, physical and mental illness, suicide of a loved one…. All of these deliver feelings of shame and all of them are painful. Continue Reading

A Key to Personal Freedom

July 6th, 2015

FreedomPhoto_July5This past weekend we celebrated our Nation’s Birthday; many of us spending time outdoors, cooking on the grill, sharing with friends and family and looking skyward as spectacular fireworks lit up the sky. As we celebrated our country I spent some time reflecting on what it truly means to be “free.”

Despite the politics, the continued cultural divides, our slow pace to be in greater accord with our environment (and I am sure the list could continue) I know how truly blessed I am in this life and I am grateful for the freedom I have in my life.

I was thinking about this word freedom and what it means in terms of each of us as individuals.

I have been working a lot with my clients around the 2nd Agreement in Don Miguel Ruiz’s the Four Agreements. He writes, “ Don’t take anything personally. Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their dream (story). When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.”

The opinions, beliefs and thoughts of others provide FEEDBACK for our consideration – they are not the TRUTH. Continue Reading

Life Happens and Then……

choose-love-over-fear-quote1

My Father shared a wonderful quote with me last week (that I very much needed to hear!) and I felt compelled to share it, and my reflections, with you this morning.

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.  Attitude, to me, is more important than facts.  It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do.  It is more important than appearances, giftedness or skill.  It will make or break a company… a church…. A home.  The remarkable thing is that we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for the day. We cannot change our past.  We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.  The only thing we can do is play the string we have, and that is our own attitude… I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how I react to it.  And so it is with you.  We are in charge of our attitude.”  Charles Swindle

I love this quote – such a vivid reminder that we are truly responsible for our choices.  I would say, “Life Happens and then we are 100% responsible for who we choose to be in every moment.”  I believe the sentiment is the same.  We absolutely cannot control what goes on around us, and there will be times of struggle, pain, unhappiness and frustration, but we can control WHO WE CHOOSE TO BE IN THE MOMENT.  Continue Reading

Thank you so much for sharing your heartfelt story here EP! I have been so honored to work with you and look forward to the journey continuing!

elaine_working_02 “I did not want a coach. I used to associate coaching with bullying. But someone I admire gave me Diane’s information and I eventually called as I was stuck in inaction and headed for what I felt was disaster: tax deadlines. I called looking for a quick fix and intended to have one session but after our initial talk together, I could see clearly that I would be in a different place in my life after working through a plan of action with her. I did not hesitate to sign up for a block of sessions even though my funds were limited. I could tell she was going to help me get somewhere different than where I currently was. Which was what I KNEW I wanted. And boy did she do that! Continue Reading

Stepping through Fear

September 29th, 2014

About a year ago I shared a blog by my daughter Jessica. In it she said, “My life experiences have taught me that courage is not about being fearless, but rather courage is about acknowledging your fears and still choosing to follow your heart.” Pretty smart for a then 19 year old! And how we live this truth over and again in our lives! (Read her blog here: http://awomanalive.com/648

I was sharing my move to Port Jefferson with a friend of mine and he said, “Di, I do not think anything scares you.” But actually that is not the truth – this has been a challenging and often scary move that has brought up a lot of emotion, a fair amount of stress and yes – some tears. The Path to Self-Acceptance

July 17th, 2014

self_love_quote_maraboli My journey has been one of deep healing, self-acceptance and learning to take both responsibility and action. When I first met Diane I was coming from a very broken place. I felt completely beaten-down, deflated and trapped professionally. This seeped into my personal life ultimately leaving me holding on to my happiness and self-esteem by a thread. My first few meetings with Diane were characterized by a litany of self-deprecation. I expressed all the ways in which I should have been a better woman: I should have a routine, I should know what I want to do in life, I should be skinnier, I should be smarter, I should like my job, I should be a better daughter, sister, girlfriend, friend, roommate, etc … the list of things I should have been and should be went on and on! you-were-bord-an-originalI remember the very first time I was really excited about who I was discovering myself to be. I ran home to tell my parents, “I am so excited – I know what I want to do when I grow up – I want to be an actress.” Can you guess the response? Let me just say it was not even close to “Wow – that is great –lets support you to learn more about that.”  Continue Reading
