humanSpeak: When Humans Speak… Humans Peak!

Brené Brown writes, “A deep sense of love and belonging is an irreducible need of all people. We are biologically, cognitively, physically, and spiritually wired to love, to be loved, and to belong. When those needs are not met, we don’t function as we were meant to. We break. We fall apart. We numb. We ache. We hurt others. We get sick.”

And yet when we experience challenges or set backs in our lives, when we come to believe that who we are is somehow broken or unacceptable to others, many of us go in to hiding. Addiction, abuse, rape, obesity, physical and mental illness, suicide of a loved one…. All of these deliver feelings of shame and all of them are painful.

We hide our pain and cover our shame and feelings of not belonging with a thick shield of protection, keeping our secrets and isolating our true selves from view. And as Brené Brown as said, in our isolation we break, fall apart and get sick

Healing in hiding is not possible.

Healing is only possible at the moment we are able to break free, share our stories, become vulnerable and recognize that our story is not singular. The story of our suffering, hurt and pain is a common thread in all of humanity.

When we discover belonging, connection and love in spite of our hurt and rejection, we can climb out from under our rock of shame.

Community supports us to heal, move on and find joy.

humanSpeak is an opportunity to hear real stories from real people who have discovered the power sharing their story. They have begun and to heal and their stories inspire us and deliver hope. More importantly their stories connect us and open our eyes to the truth that we are all just human.

Even our deepest pain, our deepest shame has a neighbor who will hold our hand and recognize their own story inside of our story.

In the moment of connection shame dissipates, healing is possible and transformation happens.

Please join me on December 10th for humanSpeaks in Port Jefferson. We have 6 inspiring, incredible storytellers and the event will conclude with Q&A, as well as audience participation, discussion and sharing.

Join us this holiday season as we celebrate the healing power of the story and the possibility of transformation.

Namaste and blessings for a wonderful Thanksgiving Day.

“The greatest gift we can give ourselves and one another is to share our stories authentically and to listen with our hearts open.” Diane L MacDonald
