Detachment in Action

By Diane

Deepak Chopra writes, “The Law of Detachment says that in order to acquire anything in the physical universe, you have to relinquish your attachment to it. This doesn’t mean you give up the intention to create your desire… you give up your attachment to the result.”

But HOW are we suppose do this? How can you desire without an attachment to the outcome?

I have been pondering these very questions quite a bit lately and have, of course, had several experiences which have lead me to a conclusion – the balance of intention and desire is created in the space of 100% focus on the action needed at a given moment.

In my last blog I wrote about my rediscovery of the ocean as a huge and important piece for my wellbeing. You may recall that I did not know where that discovery would lead but I did, at the moment of discovery, set an intention that I would somehow live by the ocean once again. I began to take small action steps in the moment. I talked to people about the possibilities. I went and looked at areas in Brooklyn that are by the water. I let myself be by the ocean in my mediation. I was detached from the outcome, from the swirling thoughts of how I would make it happen or when it would happen. I just put the thought out there and then let it go.

And here comes the crazy part. I was having my coffee one morning and thought about a friend of mine who is in the process of moving from Port Jefferson (on the water) to the NYC metro area. And I thought – hmmmm – maybe I could live there? So, I went into action again, not terribly attached to the idea in an “I have to make it happen way,” but more of an “I am curious way.” I went to see the apartment, took my daughter to see it, met with the landlord and behold – I am moving to Port Jefferson in September!

I really have no idea how all of this is going to work, what my life will look and feel like, or how commuting back and forth to be in Brooklyn and Manhattan will work for me. I do know that I am following my intuition. From there I set a clear intention, detached from the outcome, focused in the present moment and now find a whole new journey unfolding before me – a journey I never would have anticipated or even considered 2 months ago.

There is a cool process for creating and manifesting desires that emerged for me from this experience:

  • Get clear on what it is you truly desire – keep this desire loose and open enough for unconsidered possibilities to emerge.
  • Set an intention and create a series of small action steps that can be taken toward that intention.
  • Detach from the outcome and trust that if you take small steps of action toward the intention it will bear fruit. (It may not be the color or flavor you anticipated – it also might be even juicier then you ever imagined!)
  • Stay in action. Stay 100% focused in the moment on the tasks and details right in front of you. This focus and movement in the moment will keep you from getting caught up in the swirl (or anxiety or worry) of how and when and what it will look like.
  • And if the swirl of thoughts hits you like tidal wave – take a moment. Breath in the intention and breath out the attachment. Say to yourself, “I am taking action on my intention and I trust for the greatest possibility in my life to unfold.”
