Smooth Seas Do Not Make Skillful Sailors

smooth-seas-do-not-make-skillful-sailorsThis week in the It Takes A Village Wellness Center & Yoga Studio we are talking about trust and faith. Tough topics during a turbulent time when we are experiencing some rough seas.  There seems to be so much angst, anger, confusion and bashing going on in our political scene and elsewhere.

I was working with a coaching client this morning and she was saying to me how challenged she felt to detach herself from all of it – she was feeling pulled into the negativity and unable to shake it. Our conversation inspired me to share my thoughts with all of you.

The truth of our lives is that there are always challenges, always struggles and often much suffering. And yet we go on with our lives. This is, I believe the way of the world. Read more »

CharlieChaplinPoemFebruary. The month of Valentines Day, a month that surrounds us with conversations and thoughts of relationships and love.  I wanted to dig deeper into the many shades of love and spend some time exploring how to truly cultivate the concept of self-love.

In my poking around I came across an article written by a yogi about SELF-IRRESISTIBILITY.  The term immediately resonated with me.  One can find slews of articles, books, webinars and videos on how to boost our self confidence and make ourselves irresistible TO others (particularly if we are single and desiring to change that status:-) but that is not where I wanted to go. I love the idea of being IRRESISTIBLE to myself. Read more »

LIVE ALIVE: 12 Guiding Principles

dont-ask-yourself-what-the-world-needsMy father is a 12- Stepper. He has been in a 12-Step program for many years and has during his tenure there provided me with many valuable words to live by. His voice is in my head always reminding me I can handle what ever is thrown at me, to learn and practice forgiveness and to live one day at a time.

I am often asked about the name of my company A Woman Alive and my tagline of LIVE ALIVE.

What does it mean to LIVE ALIVE, to live fully? And what are the intentions we can hold to live a fulfilled and satisfying life? There will always be challenges and missteps. The Buddhist philosophy often explored in yoga emphasizes that there is always in our world suffering and that it is who we are despite that suffering that is the road to enlightenment. Read more »

A New Year’s Resolution…..

Over 15 years ago I began to practice Bikram yoga.  This lead me to experimenting and practicing a variety of styles, learning more about yoga philosophy, understanding yoga as a tool for healing, becoming a children’s yoga teacher and eventually a certified teacher for adults.

What I have learned from yoga is that there is no destination.  My practice, both Vinyasa and Bikram, evolves and changes.  Every day I approach the mat with the intention of being where I am today, the resolve to heal, grow and just practice. Read more »

humanSpeak: When Humans Speak… Humans Peak!

Brené Brown writes, “A deep sense of love and belonging is an irreducible need of all people. We are biologically, cognitively, physically, and spiritually wired to love, to be loved, and to belong. When those needs are not met, we don’t function as we were meant to. We break. We fall apart. We numb. We ache. We hurt others. We get sick.”

And yet when we experience challenges or set backs in our lives, when we come to believe that who we are is somehow broken or unacceptable to others, many of us go in to hiding. Addiction, abuse, rape, obesity, physical and mental illness, suicide of a loved one…. All of these deliver feelings of shame and all of them are painful. Read more »

When You Really Mean “NO.”

A-dishonest-yes-is-a-no-to-yourself.I am spending some time at my desk this weekend preparing for a Stress Management workshop I am teaching on Tuesday. In the process of doing some additional research on the causes of stress I came across this great quote by William James, “The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.”

How often have you made the choice to say “yes” to someone when you really wanted to say “no”? It can be extremely difficult to say “no.” When we answer with a dishonest “yes” we end up triggering additional stress and zapping our energy. The dishonest “yes” can cause us to get frustrated at ourselves and lead to resentment toward the other person. Read more »
