Are you ready to say “I CAN…” ?

By Diane

One of the things I love the most about living in the Northeast is
the change of season. As the seasons shift we are ICANgiven an opportunity to regroup and re-evaluate, to make adjustments according to the time of year and the call, not only of the changing weather, but also our focus and priorities.

As the final holiday weekend of the summer season approaches I am saying goodbye to 14 weeks of amazing racing aboard a beautiful wooden sailboat named Clara J, yoga at Cedar Beach on Friday nights, live music while over looking the harbor at Danford’s and some very memorable moments with my daughter hanging out and swimming in Conscience Bay. One of the greatest lessons for me this summer was to CREATE MORE OF WHAT I DESIRE IN MY LIFE AND LESS OF WHAT I DO NOT.

This is not always an easy task. We spend so much of our time being REACTIVE to what is going on around us – reactive to technology, reactive to others’ needs, reactive to emotional charges. These things will not go away and are a constant part of our day to day lives.

I do believe however that if we are conscious of what is really important to us, that if become more PROACTIVE and take the time to plan and schedule MORE of what we desire in our lives, we are able make it happen.

Blocking out 4 pm to 11 pm every Tuesday for the past 14 weeks took some doing – but I made it happen and missed only one race the entire season.

The Formula? Plan, Schedule, Commit and Let Go.

What I learned is that even though I often felt like I was running out the door leaving tasks undone, the reward was enormous.

I rediscovered my deep passion for sailing, made great new friends, felt recharged and refresh every Wednesday morning and have been more innovative in my work then ever before. The time pursuing something I love refueled my spirit and energized my soul for the busy months ahead. It taught me that “I Can.”

So as the summer comes to a close and the hustle and bustle of the Fall knocks at your door, I encourage you to take a moment and make a list of two or three things you would like more of in your life. Set the days and times in your calendar and make a commitment to yourself.

Say “I CAN” make it happen.

In those moments when you are able to stop REACTING, to LET GO and to PROACTIVELY seek out the time you need to refuel and to recharge you will discover a new energy – an energy that ignites your spirit, sparks your soul and reminds you always that yes, YOU CAN!
