A Key to Personal Freedom

By Diane

FreedomPhoto_July5This past weekend we celebrated our Nation’s Birthday; many of us spending time outdoors, cooking on the grill, sharing with friends and family and looking skyward as spectacular fireworks lit up the sky. As we celebrated our country I spent some time reflecting on what it truly means to be “free.”

Despite the politics, the continued cultural divides, our slow pace to be in greater accord with our environment (and I am sure the list could continue) I know how truly blessed I am in this life and I am grateful for the freedom I have in my life.

I was thinking about this word freedom and what it means in terms of each of us as individuals.

I have been working a lot with my clients around the 2nd Agreement in Don Miguel Ruiz’s the Four Agreements. He writes, “ Don’t take anything personally. Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their dream (story). When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.”

The opinions, beliefs and thoughts of others provide FEEDBACK for our consideration – they are not the TRUTH.

It is so clear for me that this is the place where many of us give away our freedom. We spend a lot of time worrying about what others think, listening to other people’s opinions and wondering how they will respond if we make a certain choice. Many of us take this as far as making choices that go against everything we believe in just to make another person happy or to avoid their POTENTIAL judgment.   Notice the word potential. The crazy part is in most cases we are actually assuming we know how others will react or respond – and the reality is we have no idea. The reactions to our choices can very often surprise us.

For many years in my life I made choices based on the desire to have others like me and approve of me. When I made choices for me and what I believed to be true for myself, I would spend time worrying about what others were thinking.

I now believe that there is no greater cage to be locked in then trying to be “the somebody” I think someone else wants me to be.

So for me – true personal freedom is my choice (and ability) to step into the world fully as myself: courageously, openly and authentically.

Live Authentic. Live Alive.
